Very deep, saturated purple/red colour and a bouquet that leads with smoky char-oak, ironstone and graphite. The palate is very full-bodied and immensely rich, decadently sweet-fruited and opulent, with sweet blackberry and currant-jelly flavours that persist long on an ultra satisfying finish. The concentration is impressive but the wine remains relatively light on its feet. A decadent wine: the epitome of old-vine Barossa shiraz. Drink to 2040.

Believed to be planted in 1843, the gnarled ancestor vines of the Freedom vineyard are one of the treasures of the Barossa. When it comes to these ancient vines, it's often an exercise in texture and fruit density, but there is grace here; there's also a distinct meaty facet that peaks the interest. The fruit is pure and weighty, but not at the expense of detail. Ripe, rich, red and dark fruits abound, the tannin is silky-fine and provides a framework. The finish flows nicely, flush with pure fruit, spice and earthen tones. Drink to 2038.

From one of the Barossa's oldest vineyards, Langmeil's 2018 The Freedom 1843 Shiraz lives up to its pedigree. Aged in French oak hogsheads (44% new), it delivers bold, delicately lifted aromas of blackberries, grilled plums and vanilla on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is velvety and plush, loaded with ripe tannins without seeming overdone or heavy. The lengthy finish adds savory hints of black olive and licorice, adding enough food-friendly complexity to keep it interesting sip after sip. Drink to 2040.
