2018 Levrier Peritas Zinfandel, Barossa Valley

Single-vineyard zinfandel matured for 24 months in new French oak. Crimson in the glass with rich aromas of macerated blood plum and black cherry with hints of crème de cassis, baking spices, leather, cedar, tobacco leaf, earth and peach skin. Notes of mahogany and mocha join in on the palate, which is full bodied, with dense tannin and some fig notes on the powerful finish. Drink 2023 to 2028.

Jo Irvine grew up around wine — her father Jim Irvine was one of the key figures in establishing Merlot's reputation in Australia. After nearly two decades as a nurse she returned to wine, working vintages in Sonoma and Napa before completing her oenology qualifications and launching Levrier in 2016.

Zinfandel — confirmed by DNA analysis to be the same variety as Italy's Primitivo — is rarely seen in Australian wine. Jo first encountered it during her time in California, where it sparked a passion that eventually found expression in this single vineyard Barossa wine. The variety thrives in warm, dry climates and the Barossa suits it well, building the dark fruit concentration and spice-driven character the variety is known for.

The wine is named Peritas after Alexander the Great's favourite greyhound, who according to legend fought a war elephant in battle and was honoured with a state funeral and a city named in his memory. A portion of proceeds from every bottle sold supports greyhound adoption and rehoming in South Australia.

Deep crimson in the glass, with rich aromas of macerated blood plum, black cherry and crème de cassis, layered with baking spices, leather, cedar and tobacco leaf. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, with earthy depth and a powerful, structured finish.

Give the wine plenty of air before serving alongside slow-braised beef, a richly seasoned lamb shoulder or aged hard cheese.
