Medium-deep brick-red/garnet with a tint of brown-ish development in the rim. The bouquet is rich and ciomplex and displays roasting pan, smoked meat and a hint of chocolate, while the palate is deep and rich, with excellent concentration and fleshy intensity, velvet texture and a long-lasting follow-through. This is a substantial and super satisfying Chianti of a higher level. It's drinking superbly right now. 09 Jan 2025 Drink 2025–2032 RRP $65.00

Poggiotondo, meaning round hill, is the family estate of Alberto Antonini, established in 1969 by his father Carlo in the Chianti DOCG of Tuscany. Alberto has spent the past decade replanting the vineyards and transforming the property into one of the best in the region. Alberto’s ultimate recognition came in 2015 when the Decanter magazine named him one of the Top 5 Winemakers in the World

The Poggiotondo Chianti Riserva DOCG from Tuscany is a beautifully crafted wine that combines tradition with modern finesse. Produced in the heart of the Chianti region, this Riserva showcases the depth and complexity of Sangiovese, reflecting the region’s rich winemaking heritage.

On the nose, aromas of ripe cherries, red currants, and dried cranberries are intertwined with notes of violets, leather, and a touch of cedar. Subtle hints of tobacco, earthy spice, and a delicate smokiness add depth and intrigue to its aromatic profile.

The palate is medium-bodied with velvety tannins and bright acidity, creating a harmonious balance. Flavors of dark cherry, plum, and raspberry are complemented by savory undertones of dried herbs, clove, and a touch of cocoa. The finish is long and elegant, with lingering notes of spice and minerality.

Crafted from meticulously grown Sangiovese grapes, the wine benefits from Tuscany’s warm days and cool nights, allowing for optimal ripening and flavor development. Aged for an extended period in oak barrels, the Poggiotondo Chianti Riserva achieves a refined structure and complexity while preserving the varietal’s vibrant fruit character.

This Riserva is an excellent companion to classic Tuscan dishes such as wild boar ragù, bistecca alla Fiorentina, or a hearty ribollita. It also pairs wonderfully with aged pecorino cheese or a simple Margherita pizza. While approachable now, it has the potential to age gracefully for 8–12 years, developing further depth and nuance.
