Blackcurrant, sandalwood and rose-petal aromas follow through to a medium body with very fine tannins and a fresh, pretty finish. Second wine. Better after 2024.

A second label of Château d’Issan, Blason d’Issan gives a more immediate, open window into Margaux while still carrying the finesse that defines the estate. Drawn from younger vines and parcels across the property’s gravelly soils, it leans on Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot bringing suppleness, all shaped by the Margaux signature of perfume and elegance.
The 2019 vintage is generous but finely detailed. Aromatics open with blackcurrant, cassis and dark cherry, lifted by violet and a touch of rose petal. There is a classic Left Bank thread running through it, cedar, tobacco and a hint of graphite, with a gentle spice note adding depth.
On the palate it is medium to full bodied with a smooth, flowing texture. The fruit is ripe and expressive, but framed by fine, polished tannins that give the wine shape without heaviness. A line of freshness keeps everything balanced, carrying through to a long finish where dark fruit, spice and a lightly savoury edge linger.
Winemaking is precise and measured, with careful extraction and well judged oak, resulting in a wine that feels both approachable and clearly tied to its origin.
This opens up plenty of interesting food options. It works beautifully with duck breast and a cherry reduction, grilled lamb with herbs, or a classic steak with pepper. For something a little different, try it with spiced eggplant with pomegranate, a lentil and walnut dish, or even a mushroom and thyme pie, the wine’s perfume and structure handle those flavours with ease.
Already drinking well with a bit of air, it will continue to evolve over the next ten to fifteen years, gaining more complexity while maintaining its elegance.
