2019 Chateau Picque Caillou Rouge, Pessac-Leognan

Château Picque Caillou Rouge from Pessac-Léognan is a refined and quietly powerful Bordeaux blend that captures the elegance and minerality that define this historic appellation. Nestled on the outskirts of Bordeaux city, the estate is a hidden gem among the gravelly soils of the Graves, producing wines with poise, structure, and a distinctly polished charm.

The château dates back to the 18th century, but its modern story begins with winemaker Paulin Calvet, who has led the estate since the early 1990s. Under his stewardship, Château Picque Caillou has gained a reputation for wines that marry classic Bordeaux structure with modern drinkability. The vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and a touch of Petit Verdot, rooted in deep gravel and clay soils that provide excellent drainage and heat retention—ideal for slow, even ripening.

Harvesting is done by hand, and the grapes are sorted with precision before fermenting in temperature-controlled vats. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, around 30 to 40 percent new, striking a balance between oak influence and varietal expression.

In the glass, this Pessac-Léognan Rouge shows aromas of blackcurrant, plum, graphite, and cedar, with hints of violet and warm spice. The palate is medium to full bodied with supple tannins, dark berry fruit, and a mineral streak that reflects the estate’s stony terroir. It finishes long and savoury with finesse and ageing potential.
