2019 Derwent Estate Méthode Traditionnelle Sparkling is a brilliant snapshot of why Southern Tasmania has become one of Australia’s most exciting sparkling wine regions. The vineyards sit in the Coal River Valley, just outside Hobart, where cool days, cold nights and long growing seasons allow fruit to ripen slowly while retaining razor sharp natural acidity. The soils are a mix of ancient sandstones and dolerite, giving tension, finesse and a distinctly Tasmanian freshness.
Derwent Estate is one of the quiet pioneers of the region, founded in the late 1980s and long committed to making wines that reflect place rather than fashion. Sparkling wine has always been part of the story here, and the méthode traditionnelle approach is taken seriously. Hand harvested fruit, gentle pressing, secondary fermentation in bottle and extended time on lees all play their part, with patience being the real secret ingredient.
The 2019 vintage is finely tuned and beautifully expressive. Lemon zest, green apple and white peach lead the way, followed by hints of brioche, almond and subtle biscuit notes from time on lees. The mousse is fine and persistent, giving the wine a creamy flow while the acidity keeps everything taut and refreshing. It feels elegant and precise rather than overtly rich, very much in the Tasmanian mould.
At the table, this is incredibly versatile. It shines with oysters, sashimi, tempura or simple seafood, but it is just as happy with roast chicken or soft cheeses. The structure and balance also mean it will continue to develop over the next five to eight years, gaining more complexity while holding onto its vibrant core. A confident, beautifully made Australian sparkling that rewards both immediate enjoyment and a little patience.
