Deep-pitched black/blue fruit, licorice, game and floral qualities on the powerfully scented nose. Broad and weighty in style, showing serious power to the bitter cherry, cassis and blueberry flavors, which take on smoky mineral and exotic spice notes as the wine opens up. There's noteworthy energy here for such a broad-shouldered wine. Finishes extremely long, chewy and subtly sweet, with steadily building tannins and resonating blue fruit and floral notes.
95 -97 points Josh Raynolds vinous.comFor the second time in the past four vintages, this parcel of vines—replanted in 2000—has yielded a "perfect" wine. Rostaing's 2019 Cote Rotie Cote Brune boasts crazy but harmonious complexity on the nose. From scents of violets and rose petals to red raspberries and currants and on to savory tones of black olives and mocha, there's just so much going on, yet all combine effortlessly to pull the taster inexorably into the wine. Then the swells of concentration and layers of texture cross the palate, lingering in velvety richness on the long, vibrant finish. Just. Wow.

It was the end of a long Sunday of winery visits when I slumped into Le Beau Rivage in Condrieu to meet Pierre Rostaing for dinner (and a few more wines). Since I hadn't been able to visit the winery, he brought some representative blends of wines still in barrel, plus a few other treats to taste, but we didn't cover the full range of wines this year.
