2019 E Guigal Cote-Rotie Brune et Blonde de Guigal Magnum 1.5L, Rhone Valley

Long before the Rhône's great single vineyards captured the attention of collectors, Brune et Blonde was introducing wine lovers to the magic of Côte Rôtie. Named after the appellation's two legendary hillsides, the iron rich Côte Brune and the lighter, limestone influenced Côte Blonde, the wine brings together the best qualities of both. It remains one of the great benchmark expressions of the region, combining perfume, structure and savoury complexity with remarkable consistency.

Founded in 1946, E. Guigal has become one of the defining names of the Rhône Valley, with three generations of the family helping shape the reputation of the region on the world stage. The excellent 2019 vintage delivered fruit of exceptional concentration and balance, while the traditional inclusion of a small proportion of Viognier in the ferment adds aromatic lift and silky texture to the Syrah dominated blend.

Deep ruby with youthful garnet highlights, the bouquet is beautifully expressive, revealing blackberry, black cherry and damson layered with violets, cracked pepper and smoked herbs. As the wine evolves in the glass, notes of olive tapenade, bacon fat, cedar and exotic spice emerge, adding depth and unmistakable Côte Rôtie character. The palate is powerful yet finely detailed, delivering concentrated dark fruits framed by polished tannins and vibrant acidity. There is a wonderful interplay between richness and elegance, while the finish lingers with savoury spice, floral perfume and mineral nuance.

This is a magnificent companion for roast lamb with rosemary, venison loin, duck with olives, mushroom pithivier or slow braised beef cheeks. While already immensely enjoyable with a generous decant, the wine has the structure and balance to reward patient cellaring for many years to come.
