Very deep and youthful red-purple colour, bright and shiny; intense cassis aroma, subtly briary, concentrated fruit evident. The wine is full-bodied and firmly structured, a powerhouse with lavish tannins which are in good balance with the considerable strength of the fruit. There's a lovely core of sweet fruit. This will be long lived and richly reward cellaring. 17 Jan 2023 Drink 2023–2039

With 14/4/1% merlot/cabernet franc/malbec. All varieties fermented and matured separately, in French oak for up to 14 months (15% new). This is routinely a very smart wine and this year is no exception. Savoury overtones colour the nose with layers of peppercorn, hung deli meat and ironstone/ferrous notes, while the juicy undercurrent of red and black fruits courses beneath it all. Compelling drinking. Drink by 2031.

Evans & Tate Redbrook Estate Cabernet Merlot from Margaret River is a polished, elegant blend that captures everything this world-class region does so well—structure, finesse, and plush, dark fruit. It’s part of the Redbrook range, which focuses on small parcels of premium fruit and a more refined winemaking approach, all guided by senior winemaker Matt Byrne, who’s been with Evans & Tate for over two decades.

Cabernet Sauvignon leads the way here, delivering classic cassis, bay leaf, and fine tannin structure. Merlot brings the softness—think juicy plum and red berries—rounding out the mid-palate and adding a touch of generosity. Fruit is sourced from mature vineyards in the Wilyabrup and Jindong subregions, fermented in small batches, and aged in French oak for added complexity and gentle spice.

Aromatically, it opens with blackcurrant, violet, dried herbs and a subtle graphite edge. The palate is medium to full-bodied with seamless texture, fine-grained tannins, and a long, savoury finish. There’s a great interplay between ripeness and restraint, making it both satisfying now and promising in the cellar.

Pair it with roast lamb, chargrilled eggplant, mushroom stroganoff or aged cheddar. It’s a classy all-rounder—suited for dinner parties, gifting, or just a treat-yourself night in.
