2019 Kreglinger Rose Brut, Pipers Brook

Exceptionally pale in colour with a delicate salmon hue, this Tasmanian sparkling wine shows a fine and persistent bead in the glass. A very promising start. The nose is rather delicate, with gentle whiffs of strawberry, cherry, cranberry and watermelon before descending into more complex, evolved aromas of white button mushroom, Manjimup truffle and lemon meringue. The palate shows slightly more development than the nose, while the acidity counterbalances the residual sugar exceptionally well, giving the wine energy and an electric drive. Utterly delicious.

A sparkling rosé, 100% pinot noir from Pipers Brook with five years' tirage and one year under cork. There's a light blush in the glass and a fine, energetic bead and mousse. Expressive red apple, red cherry and citrus fruits with hints of wild strawberry, red berry cream, apple turnover, crushed stone, fresh brioche and clover blossom. Clean, dry and precise with a febrile acid line and flavours that draw out nicely on the finish. Drink to 2036.

Light Pink Lady apple hues in the glass and on the nose. Some baked rhubarb and cantaloupe. Citrus falls in the shape of tangerine, with some lemon drop as well. Underneath that you’ll find some pickled plum, strawberry delicately spiced with ginger. A fine persistent bead with cranberry nougatine and biscotti. I love the way this wine takes you on a thrill ride from tree fruit to foraging berries and onto underground fragrant roots. Its bright acidity lingers, carrying the mid palate spice through to the finish. This is the kind of sparkling wine that carries you right through a meal, shining with appetisers and hitting a crescendo with seared salmon for main, maybe another bottle to share alongside dessert? Drink now or will cellar well for another 3-5 years. Drink to 2030.

Pale salmon-pink colour. Nougat, marzipan and vanilla nose, hints at caramel and rose petals, a hint of gunpowder later; the palate intense and dry, crisp and refined, with line and length aplenty. Crisp, tangy, appetising wine. Great energy from front to back of palate. Impressive bubbly, which aims high. Drink to 2031.

From the cool maritime vineyards of Pipers Brook in northern Tasmania comes a sparkling rosé that highlights the region’s world class credentials. Kreglinger Wine Estates was established in Tasmania by the Belgian Kreglinger family in the late 1990s, drawing on a long history in fine wine distribution dating back to 1797. The estate focuses on traditional method sparkling wines crafted from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grown in the cool, windswept vineyards of Pipers River and Pipers Brook. The 2019 Rosé Brut reflects Tasmania’s long growing season, pristine air and naturally high acidity, ideal for producing sparkling wines of finesse and structure.

In the glass it shows a delicate salmon pink hue with a fine, persistent bead. The aromatics are elegant and layered, revealing wild strawberry, raspberry and red apple alongside hints of brioche and citrus blossom. There is a subtle savoury edge and gentle toasty note from extended time on lees.

On the palate it is dry, vibrant and beautifully balanced. Red berry fruit and crisp apple glide across a spine of bright natural acidity, supported by a creamy mousse that adds texture and refinement. Notes of citrus zest and freshly baked pastry carry through to a long, clean finish with lingering freshness. It is a sparkling rosé that balances fruit charm with serious structure.

Pair with freshly shucked oysters, smoked salmon, sushi, charcuterie or soft washed rind cheeses. While captivating now for its freshness and energy, it will cellar comfortably for five to eight years, developing further complexity and toasty nuance.
