2019 Marchesi Antinori Solaia Toscana IGT, Tuscany

The lingering impression of this 2019 Marchesi Antinori Solaia is a wine with a beautiful, melting texture and a weightless quality. It is concentrated and full of flavor but without being heavy. The aromas are very bright and exuberant, with crushed blackcurrant and cassis notes. Charred toast and incense-like notes of oak-spice dominate at present, and they will need time to integrate but every now and then an intriguing aroma of violet passes by. The 2019 vintage was more ‘classical.’ Winter was fairly cold and there was rain in spring and early summer but there were no heat spikes in summer and from the end of August through September and October the weather was perfect for ripening each of the three varieties. The blend in this 2019 Solaia is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Sangiovese, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Having been fortunate enough to taste 10 vintages of this wine at a single tasting I love the direction in which they are going, becoming more and more graceful with each vintage, culminating in this 2019. Bravo!

This wine has a deeply savory nose, with seaweed, soy sauce, olives, tobacco, black licorice and a rich medley of cherries, blackberries and plums. The fruity, spicy palate brings more berries, dark chocolate and chili peppers, emphasized by palpable heat and sticky but gentle tannins through a seemingly infinite finish. It's exceptionally drinkable now, but a few more years would guarantee a command performance.

Dark ruby red with opaque core. Fragrant and elegant nose, complex, of cassis and blackcurrants, plus some fine wood, then an interplay of ripe blackberries and subtle spicy components. On the palate enormously polished and full of finesse, with clear, vivid fruit and well-integrated tannin, develops in many layers, precise, very long.

Genial and polihedric in the primary profile offering notes of plums, lavender, wild violets, agapanthus flowers, citronella and marjoram. Decidedly Mediterranean hints enhance the secondary profile which is rich in oregano and ripe strawberries. Full bodied, perfectly polymerized tannins of splendid velvety form and a finale with notable progression which ignites from the centre palate onwards. A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Franc. Better from 2024.
