2019 McHenry Hohnen Rolling Stone, Margaret River

This is a blend of cabernet sauvignon, malbec, merlot and petit verdot. Opens with beautifully scented, aromas of blackcurrant and blackberry with a slightly cedary influence. The palate is perfectly weighted and crafted. Deeply concentrated fruit surges forward, supported by quite firm tannins and plenty of oak. Has a slightly chalky character with traces of bay leaf and seashell minerality. A wine for extended cellaring. Drink to 2044.

A riot of berries, violets, mulch and Madagascar vanilla makes you take note. Every time you take a sniff a new aroma emergescoffee, leather and tobacco. The palate is structured, bitter chocolate oak tannins rib around the core, setting it up for a great life in the cellar. This is too early to drink, and its potential is mind-blowing. This has already cemented into a harmonious wine, certainly firmly structured with stately tannins but all in sync. Aromas and flavours roll through like waves: fresh tobacco, violets, nori, cassis and mulberries, cedary oak and spices with a whiff of menthol in the background. Full bodied, detailed and complex. The 2019 Rolling Stone comprises a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The wine aromatically leads with graphite and toasted oak, cassis and blueberry, black olive tapenade and bramble. The palate follows this exact template. The tannins are the highlight for me here; they are black, profuse and grainy, and it gives a shape to the wine through the finish, which both extends and elongates the flavor profile. Very good indeed. Drink to 2039.

The brooding 2019 Rolling Stone offers powerful aromas of blackberry, violets, ink and dried herbs with a strong backbone of French oak. Richly flavored yet compact and controlled with muscular tannins, expressive gravel/blackberry flavors are now lifted by a touch of cedary development, suggesting this is more medium than long-term proposition.

McHenry Hohnen was founded in 2004 by notable Perth wine retailer and hospitality name Murray McHenry and David Hohnen, winemaker and founder of Cape Mentelle and Cloudy Bay.

Murray planted his first vines in Margaret River in 1984 at what is now the Burnside Vineyard. The McHenry Hohnen wines are made from fruit grown in three estate vineyards in the southern part of the Margaret River: Hazel’s at Witchcliffe, Calgardup Brook in Karridale and Burnside enroute to Cowaramup. The vineyards are managed by a team led by Ben Sieber, while Soave-born Jacopo Dalli Cani is in charge back at the winery.

The Rolling Stone represents the best red wine of a vintage for McHenry Hohnen, and is made from the finest parcels of fruit grown in Hazel’s Vineyard. The 2024 is a 62/30/4/4 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot.
