2019 Moorilla Muse Extra Brut, Tamar Valley

Very pale lemon yellow hue. Lemon curd, meringue and short crust pastry aromas. Bright apple fruit on the palate, grapefruit pith notes with a creamy, biscuity savoury undertone. It's light and fresh, not showing its six years except the creamy maturity of the bead. Lovely length and bright to the long end. Drink to 2030.

A blend of 74/26% chardonnay/pinot noir. Light straw in the glass with a fine, energetic bead and mousse. There's a core of crunchy green apple, lemon and grapefruit with hints of clover blossom, a daub of crème fraîche, freshly picked field mushrooms, sea spray, pastries, crushed shells, white flowers and ozone. There's a lot to like here; it's precise, with some nice biscuity tones, a dry, refreshing energy and a long draw of flavour at the back end. It makes for lovely drinking. Drink to 2036.

The 2019 Muse Extra Brut from Moorilla is a 74/26 blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grown in the St Matthias vineyard on the western banks of the Tamar River, north of Launceston.

The grapes were whole bunch pressed, with half of the juice fermented with select yeast strains in well-seasoned older oak and the other half in stainless steel. The wine was lees stirred for six weeks and was not allowed malolactic conversion. The blended and bottled wine was tiraged in early July and spent a minimum of 50 months on lees ahead of disgorgement that has been taking place from October 2023.

Drinking beautifully on release, it will cellar well over several years, gaining a toastier honey character and a rounder, more generous palate as it ages.

Moorilla was established in 1958 by Claudio Alcorso, making it one of Tasmania's oldest vineyards and a genuine pioneer of cool-climate viticulture in the state. The estate expanded to the St Matthias Vineyard on the western banks of Tamar River in later years, and it is from this site that this wine draws fruit from. The east facing slope features loamy clay soils with high rock content and benefits from the long, cool ripening conditions of northern Tasmania. The vineyard produces aromatic grapes of real precision and mineral clarity, perfect for Moorilla winemaker Conor van der Reest who favours subtle complexity and structure in his wines.
