The Orin Swift Abstract Red from Sonoma is one of Dave Phinney’s most recognisable and crowd-pleasing wines, a bold Grenache-led blend that brings together fruit from top sites across Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino counties. Phinney, famed for his dramatic winemaking style and striking labels, created Abstract to be a wine of generosity and seamless drinkability while still carrying complexity and polish. It sits in the heart of the Orin Swift range, bridging his approachable blends with his more structured Cabernet releases.

The blend is anchored by Grenache, with Syrah and Petite Sirah adding colour, structure and spice. Fruit is sourced from old-vine vineyards, many with low yields and deep-rooted vines that provide intensity and character. Winemaking involves small-lot fermentations and careful oak ageing, layering richness without overwhelming the fruit.

In the glass it is deep ruby with purple highlights. The bouquet bursts with ripe blackberry, raspberry and dark plum alongside hints of black cherry liqueur, licorice, mocha and warm spice. The palate is plush and full-bodied, offering juicy red and black fruits framed by velvety tannins and a smooth, rounded texture. Oak adds subtle notes of chocolate, espresso and vanilla, carrying through to a long, fruit-driven and satisfying finish.
