The spread of flavour here is elite. It's not the density, which is significant but not overbearing, but rather it's the way the flavours expand as they roll through the mouth, like rice in water, the finish vastly more voluminous than the start. It shows textbook characters of blackcurrant, bay leaf and tobacco, and while there are oak influences in the form of cedar, chocolate and dark, sweet coffee, they are folded into the fruit with the deftest of touch. And then there are the tannins. These have a sweetness of their own, and an authority, and yet they are a masterclass in integration. Stand back. This wine has its sights set firmly on the future.

Medium deep crimson. Classically beautiful wine with intense blackcurrant pastille leafy aromas with vanilla, toasty marzipan notes. Well concentrated and smoothly textured with ample ripe soft cassis, dark plum, hint of panforte fruits, fine grained/ cedar tannins, attractive mid palate viscosity, toasty vanilla notes and well-integrated acidity before finishing claret firm. Drink 2028 – 2042.

Deeply coloured, this bold and dense 2019 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon opens up with punchy aromas of red currant, black currant, red dessert earth and dried herbs with excellent fruit volume. A tight and compact palate follows - the fruit expressive and generous, the tannins firm and well formed, both coming together to deliver a long, composed finish. It’s classic Cabernet Sauvignon built for the long haul. 2030-2044.

Harvested 16th April, gets 80% new French oak. Cherry dipped in chocolate, a slight roast red capsicum and blonde tobacco top note, in with some flowers, a little mint and sweet biscuit oak. It’s all cherry and red fruit, fine chalk dust tannin offers grip, acidity is balanced, and there’s a general succulence to the wine that’s very appealing. Finish has tannin, and maybe a little drying oak, but gee it’s a good Cabernet all up.

The winery’s first release of the 1988 vintage of First Growth, was met with outstanding success, winning the Penfold Hyland Trophy in Perth and being judged the 6th highest rated Bordeaux-Style in the 1991 International Wine Challenge in London. This was the first step in establishing Parker Estate’s reputation for producing wines of outstanding quality and longevity. Fast forward 31 years, and the story is the same. The 2019 First Growth is 100% Cabernet, sourced from the best parcels of fruit from the Abbey Estate.
