The 2019 Brut Rosé is a pretty rich, heady wine from Pol Roger, largely because of the inclusion of 18% still red wine in the blend. This rich, vinous Rosé packs a pretty substantial punch. Sweet red cherry, rose petal, dried herbs and kirsch are all dialed up. This is a decidedly extroverted Champagne that captures all the radiance of the year.
First made in 1975, Pol Roger’s Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is one of Champagne’s most iconic wines. The current releases, 2018 and 2004 for the Vinothèque, are both superb, but that is to be expected. I am increasingly impressed with the Brut Vintage Cuvée de Réserve and Blanc de Blancs Cuvée de Réserve, both of which age beautifully. The late-release Vinothèque program makes a very strong case for buying those wines in their original releases and cellaring them.

Pol Roger's vintage rosé is the finest I have tasted in recent years from the superlative 2019 vintage. It's deeply expressive of Pinot Noir fruit in its typically deep colour, yet immaculately composed in length, freshness and structure. There's some opulence of fruit in juicy cherry, raspberry and pomegranate, forward and ripe but never over-sweet or broad, yet it is cut with gentle bitter herbs, violet, pepper complexity and plumped up by a subtle creamy depth. While still carrying some of the slightly jumpy energy of youth, this will settle into an immaculate vintage rosé with even one further year on cork. Drinking Window: 2026 - 2036

Pol Roger Rosé has long been one of Champagne’s great under the radar prestige wines, combining the house’s signature refinement with remarkable depth and ageing potential. Founded in 1849 and still family owned, Pol Roger remains one of the last major Champagne houses to retain a fiercely independent spirit, quietly producing wines that are adored by collectors, sommeliers and critics alike. The house is famously linked with Winston Churchill, though the Rosé has developed its own devoted following for its balance of elegance, texture and beautifully restrained power.
The 2019 vintage is exceptional, shaped by warm conditions that delivered ripe fruit while retaining freshness and precision. Pinot Noir leads the blend, including carefully selected still red wine from grand cru vineyards in Bouzy and Ambonnay, bringing both structure and seductive red fruit character. Chardonnay adds lift and finesse, giving the wine that unmistakable Pol Roger tension and detail. Aromas of wild strawberry, raspberry and blood orange rise from the glass alongside rose petals, brioche, toasted almond and subtle spice. With air, deeper layers of red currant, baked pastry, chalk and delicate smoky minerality begin to unfold.
The palate is where the wine truly shines. The mousse is incredibly fine and creamy, carrying waves of red berry fruit, citrus zest and savoury complexity across the tongue with effortless precision. Despite the richness of the vintage, the wine remains beautifully poised, with bright acidity and chalky minerality giving shape and energy through a remarkably long finish. There is both immediate pleasure and serious structure here, making it equally compelling now or after years in the cellar.
This is Champagne built for proper dining and long celebrations. Lobster with saffron butter, duck breast with cherries or seared tuna with sesame crust would all be sensational matches. It would also be magnificent with aged comté, truffle dishes or simply poured slowly through the evening as the wine continues to evolve in the glass. There is a quiet confidence to Pol Roger Rosé that feels timeless, polished without ever becoming flashy, and deeply rewarding for those who appreciate detail and balance over overt richness.
Critics continue to rate Pol Roger Rosé among the finest non prestige rosé Champagnes for its consistency, elegance and ageing potential, and the 2019 release feels destined to become one of the house’s standout modern vintages. This is serious Champagne with soul, precision and undeniable class.
