Lovely cabernet notes of bell pepper, blackcurrants, blackberry leaves and cassis, together with some cocoa powder. I like the freshness. Medium body and creamy, powdery tannins. Juicy and extremely drinkable. 80% cabernet sauvignon, the rest merlot, cabernet franc, petit verdot and some malbec. Drink from 2023.

92 points James Suckling

Robert Mondavi was one of the great pioneers of California wine, establishing his Oakville winery in 1966 with a vision to produce Napa Valley wines of international distinction. His influence helped transform the region into a world renowned destination for Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate continues his legacy today, crafting wines that combine generous Californian fruit with elegance, structure and a genuine sense of place.

The excellent 2019 vintage enjoyed a long, favourable growing season, allowing Cabernet Sauvignon to develop rich, concentrated flavours while retaining natural freshness. Sourced from vineyards across Napa Valley, the wine combines ripe dark fruit with the complexity of careful oak maturation, producing a beautifully balanced expression of this celebrated region.

Deep ruby red with dark garnet highlights. Blackcurrant, ripe blackberry and dark cherry mingle with cedar, mocha, tobacco leaf and a hint of dried bay leaf. The palate is plush and inviting, with concentrated black fruits, finely polished tannins and a lovely savoury undertone. Notes of dark chocolate, graphite and gentle spice carry through a long, satisfying finish.

Try it with slow roasted lamb and rosemary, grilled beef with a porcini crust, or smoky eggplant stuffed with spiced lentils and walnuts. Its richness also makes it a terrific partner for a classic Tuscan beef ragù with pappardelle.

Cellaring: Drink now to 2035. Already beautifully approachable, with enough structure to develop greater savoury complexity over the coming decade.
