Blend of merlot and cabernet franc. Some wines just put you at ease, from the outset. The volume of fruit here matched to the sure swagger of tannin speaks in no uncertain terms of the quality on offer. This is absolutly top echelon. Blackcurrant, bay leaves, cedarwood, beetroot and kirsch flavours drum captivatingly through the palate and on through the long, but highly structured, finish.

Wrattonbully, situated between the Coonawarra and Padthaway regions, is known for its cool climate and limestone-rich soils, making it an ideal location for growing Bordeaux varieties. The cool temperatures allow for a long growing season, enabling the grapes to develop deep, concentrated flavors while retaining natural acidity. The Whalebone Vineyard, in particular, benefits from its unique terroir, contributing to the wine’s elegance, depth, and aging potential.

Tapanappa’s winemaking philosophy is deeply rooted in respect for the vineyard’s unique terroir. The Whalebone Vineyard, located in Wrattonbully, sits on ancient limestone soils that were once an ancient seabed, contributing to the wine’s minerality and structure. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted to ensure only the best fruit is used. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, and the wine is aged in French oak barrels, with a portion of new oak, to enhance complexity and integrate the flavors.

Tapanappa Whalebone Merlot Cabernet Franc is a versatile wine that pairs beautifully with a variety of rich and flavorful dishes. It’s an excellent match for roasted or grilled meats, such as lamb, beef, or venison. The wine’s savory notes also complement dishes like braised short ribs, mushroom-based stews, or aged cheeses like cheddar or Gouda. For a more refined pairing, try it with duck confit or a herb-crusted rack of lamb.
