55/35/10% grenache/mataro/shiraz, from vines up to 100 yo; matured 18 months in older French oak hogsheads and puncheons. A longstanding mainstay of the ever-diversifying Teusner stable, Avatar has always been one of my Barossa GMS go-tos. Teusner's mastery in championing fruit and integrity before oak and artefact make for exquisite definition and detail, multi-dextrous food-matching versatility and downright deliciousness. Oh, and nothing is lost in longevity, either. Its true greatness is confirmed by superfine tannins, effortless fruit persistence and impeccable, understated oak support.

Beautifully fragrant and lifted, there’s Provençal herbs, dark cherry, 85% cacao chocolate and a touch of five-spice. Sweet, fleshy and mouthfilling, there’s dark cherry, plums, a lick of vanilla and a lifted floral element. There is juiciness and richness and a softness and suppleness that envelopes the palate, but it all sits beautifully with bright acidity and just the right amount of tannin to tighten everything up. Really delicious, satisfying and so bloody drinkable.

Vines almost 100 years old, matured in used puncheons and hogsheads for 16 months. Retains both crimson hue and depth, the shiraz, despite being only a quarter of the blend, has a significant impact, both in terms of dark/ black fruit flavour and firmer structure, but at the end of the day, it’s the heady perfume and juicy red fruits of the grenache and mataro that make this glorious wine what it is.
