The love affair between Margaret River and cabernet sauvignon is seemingly indissoluble. The bouquet is fragrant and flowery, the medium-bodied palate supple and juicy, cassis to the fore, but backed by finely balanced, ripe tannins. There's oak present, but you don't notice it.

An elegant nose of fresh mulch, graphite and cigar-box spice makes way for a lithe frame draped with flavour. Notes of coffee, black plums and berries fill the core. This is a gracefully-styled cabernet that's very inviting in its youth, although it will cellar very well 24 MAR 2022 Drink 2022–2032

A small, focused project with a clear point of view, Thompson Estate has built its reputation on precision and site expression in Margaret River. The Specialist range sits at the top of the portfolio, with fruit selected from the estate’s best parcels and handled with a careful, detail driven approach. The 2019 vintage in Margaret River is widely regarded as one of the standouts, delivering both concentration and balance, a perfect platform for Cabernet.
Warm, dry conditions through the growing season allowed the fruit to ripen evenly, while the region’s cooling ocean influence preserved freshness and structure. The result is a wine that carries both power and poise, very much in line with the best examples from this part of the world.
Deep, inky ruby in the glass, the aromatics are rich and layered. Blackcurrant, blackberry and dark plum sit alongside violet, bay leaf and a touch of cassis. There is a classic Margaret River signature of cedar, graphite and a gentle herbal lift, adding complexity without overshadowing the fruit.
The palate is full bodied yet beautifully controlled. Dense dark fruit is wrapped in firm, finely grained tannins, giving the wine both structure and length. Oak is seamlessly integrated, bringing notes of spice, cocoa and a hint of vanilla, while a line of acidity keeps everything focused and balanced. It finishes long and persistent, with both fruit and savoury elements lingering.
This is built for serious food. Roast lamb, beef short ribs, or a perfectly grilled steak all work beautifully, as do dishes with earthy elements that echo the wine’s depth.
While it can be enjoyed now with a good decant, it is very much a wine for the cellar. Expect it to evolve over fifteen to twenty years, developing more complex layers of tobacco, leather and earth.
There is a sense of confidence here, a wine that captures the strength of the 2019 vintage and the precision of a small, quality driven producer.
