Blackcurrants, blackberries, flowers and lead pencil on the nose. Full-bodied with tangy fruit as well as a orange peel and walnut undertone. Tight and focused at the finish. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, malbec, merlot, and petit verdot. Drinkable, but better in 2024. Screw cap.
94 points James Suckling
From one of Margaret River’s founding estates, Amy’s is the more approachable lens on Moss Wood’s deeply classical style. Established in 1969 by Dr Bill Pannell and now under the long stewardship of Keith Mugford and Clare Mugford, Moss Wood has built a reputation for meticulous viticulture and wines that age with grace. Amy’s, named after the Mugford family’s daughter, draws on estate fruit and younger vines, offering earlier drinking while still carrying that unmistakable house signature.
Margaret River’s maritime climate, with its warm days and cooling ocean influence, is ideal for Cabernet based blends. The result is fruit that ripens fully while retaining structure and freshness, and in this Cabernet Merlot blend the two varieties work seamlessly together.
Deep ruby in colour, the aromatics are bright and inviting. Blackcurrant, plum and red berries lead, followed by subtle notes of bay leaf, cedar and a gentle spice. There is a lifted, leafy edge that adds complexity without dominating.
The palate is medium bodied and finely balanced, dark fruit flowing through soft, well shaped tannins. Merlot brings a supple, rounded texture, while Cabernet provides structure and length. A line of acidity keeps everything fresh, and the oak is neatly integrated, adding a touch of spice and polish.
This is a versatile partner at the table. Roast lamb, grilled steaks, or even a rich vegetable dish with lentils and herbs all work beautifully. It also handles classic comfort dishes with ease, making it a go to for relaxed meals.
Drink it now and over the next five to ten years while that balance of fruit and structure is at its peak.
There is a quiet reliability here, a wine that consistently delivers more than expected, offering a glimpse into one of Australia’s great estates without needing to wait decades.
