The intensity of this super chardonnay was evident the moment I screwed the top off.. Wow?
This captures so much if the character of this excellent, small Margaret River vintage. It's delicate, yet it has so much power driving through the palate. Butterscotch and white peach with an edge of nectarine work in harmony. The oak treatment is excellent, providing such control.
Mike Peterkin has been making great chardonnay for years, but this one mights just be the best yet.

The wines of Pierro are the culmination of passion, innovation, location, climate and time. Wherever Pierro wines are enjoyed around the world today they invariably impart a tangible trace of their idyllic place of origin – warm southern climes, ancient soils, healthful vines and years of skilled hands-on viticulture and winemaking. For over a quarter of a century Pierro has striven to fuse these elements to produce superior wines of singular extraction, character and elegance. The quest for heightened quality continues with each passing vintage.

Willyabrup vineyard is located in what is widely regarded as amongst the finest wine grape growing terrain in the world. Located in the heart of Western Australia’s renowned Margaret River wine region, this far-flung locality has a viticultural pedigree second to none. Surrounded by open water on three sides between capes Leeuwin and Naturaliste, the wine region is almost completely free of pollutants and contaminants. Year-round it is swept by pure, cool sea breezes, blowing in off the Indian and Southern Oceans. Mild, wet winters and sun-splashed summer seasons add to the viticultural equation. A stable and predictable Mediterranean maritime climate is a vigneron’s dream-come-true, and Margaret River has this too. The vineyard is situated on the north-facing south bank of the Willyabrup Brook, a pristine freshet that meanders down its namesake valley to the sea.

Pierro history is inextricably aligned with the emergence of Margaret River as one of the great young wine regions of the world. We couldn’t be located in a better grape growing or winemaking district if we tried!

100% Chardonnay
Handpicked, hand-sorted, gently whole-bunch pressed. Fermented and matured in French oak,(50% new, 50% one year old). Malolactic secondary fermentation. Hand-stirred on the lees for 12 months. The cool wet conditions of the 2019 vintage proved to be a bit of a challenge in Margaret River. However, Chardonnay is an early ripening variety and Pierro team were able to complete the hand picking before the rain.

Pierro’s tradition of putting their Chardonnay through a malolactic fermentation proved particularly advantageous this vintage due to the high natural acidity.

The wine is aromatic, delicate and elegant yet with power & finesse. Layers of flavour & texture but with lingering length. A quintessential Pierro Chardonnay from a cool vintage that will age for many years.
