Broad, rich and expressive, this polished red exudes cherry and raspberry fruit, graphite, earth and underbrush aromas and flavors. Powerful, with a thick swath of tannins flexing their grip on the finish, plus vibrant acidity. One of the more backward 2021s, this needs time. 262 cases made. Drink: 2030+

Argiano's remarkable renaissance has made it one of the most exciting estates in Montalcino, but Vigna del Suolo represents something even more special. The historic property dates back to the sixteenth century, with its magnificent Renaissance villa overlooking vineyards on the southwestern slopes of the appellation. Under the direction of Bernardino Sani, the estate has embraced organic viticulture and a meticulous approach to individual vineyard expression. Vigna del Suolo sits at the very top of the range, a limited production Brunello that captures the elegance, depth and extraordinary ageing potential of old vine Sangiovese.
The vineyard is a prized parcel of mature Sangiovese vines growing in limestone rich soils, where careful farming and naturally modest yields produce fruit of exceptional character. The 2021 vintage is widely regarded as one of Montalcino's finest recent years, combining beautifully ripe fruit with vibrant acidity and impressive tannin structure. At Argiano, that translates into a wine of remarkable clarity and concentration. Gentle extraction and thoughtful maturation allow the character of the vineyard to remain central, with the structure and freshness needed for decades of development.
Brilliant ruby garnet with a luminous, youthful core. Wild cherry, ripe raspberry and redcurrant mingle with dried rose petals, violet and blood orange. As the wine opens, notes of liquorice, sweet tobacco, cedar and crushed limestone emerge, accompanied by a delicate suggestion of dried sage. The palate is concentrated yet beautifully controlled, with succulent red fruit framed by finely sculpted tannins and vibrant acidity. There is a wonderful mineral tension beneath the fruit, while orange peel, savoury herbs and subtle earthy spice contribute further complexity. The finish is exceptionally long and fragrant, leaving a lingering impression of cherry, rose and chalky mineral detail.
Porcini risotto, wild mushroom pappardelle or roasted eggplant with tomato and aged Pecorino would all make excellent companions. Duck breast with cherries, slow roasted lamb with rosemary or a beautifully grilled bistecca alla Fiorentina would also suit its depth and structure. Decant generously if opening young, although this is very much a Brunello for the cellar, where its finer details will continue to emerge over many years.
Cellaring: Drink 2030 to 2050+. The exceptional balance, concentration and structure of the 2021 vintage suggest outstanding long term ageing potential.
