Once again, this is my favorite of the three Gran Selezione wines made by Barone Ricasoli. The 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Gaiole Roncicone offers energy and a great sense of focus thanks to the elegant mineral tones of crushed seashell and chalk that frame a core of elegant berry fruit. Indeed, marine fossils are often discovered in this 10-hectare vineyard site. I love the precision and linearity of the silky and long-lasting finish. The personality is finessed and fine.

Sourced from the prestigious Roncicone vineyard in Gaiole in Chianti, it combines tradition with modern elegance. Barone Ricasoli, one of the oldest wineries in Italy, has been perfecting the art of winemaking since 1141, and under the guidance of winemaker Francesco Ricasoli, they continue to produce wines of exceptional quality.

The grapes for this red blend of Sangiovese and small amounts of other local varieties are handpicked from the carefully managed vineyards at the heart of the Chianti Classico zone. The Gran Selezione designation indicates the highest quality, and the fruit undergoes fermentation in small stainless steel tanks to preserve its fresh, vibrant character. Aging in a mix of French and Hungarian oak barrels imparts a nuanced complexity and depth, balancing the wine’s fruit-forward qualities with earthy, spicy undertones.

In the glass, it reveals a deep ruby color with garnet reflections. The nose is a captivating mix of ripe red fruits, such as cherries and raspberries, combined with subtle notes of leather, tobacco, and earthy spice.
