A soft and crunchy wine with plenty of red cherry, light chocolate and orange peel aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied with creamy, open-grained tannins and a savory, juicy finish. Drink or hold.

Not to diminish Casanova di Neri’s single-vineyard offerings, but in 2021, my money is on the white label. This bottling brings together the estate’s historic parcels in the cool district of Torrenieri, and it will need a few more years before unveiling its full potential. For now, traces of damp earth, black tea and cinnamon bark transpire with coaxing. The tight and sinewy frame guards the fruit closely but allows gorgeous floral perfumes to slowly seep out. Fine, chalky tannins are long and tactile. Very zesty too.

The 2021 is sleek, defined, and incredibly pure. The nose offers a precise beam of dark cherry, black raspberry, and the estate’s signature balsamic note—a mix of wild mint and savory herbs. On the palate, it is medium-to-full-bodied with a texture that is pure silk. The tannins are polished to a high sheen, supporting a core of vibrant fruit that lingers on the finish. It’s a Brunello of immediate pleasure that will also age effortlessly for a decade. A smart, sophisticated buy.

Casanova di Neri has been one of Montalcino's most admired estates since Giovanni Neri founded the winery in 1971. Today, his son Giacomo continues the family's dedication to Sangiovese, producing wines that balance generous fruit with the structure and elegance expected of great Brunello. The estate's classic Brunello di Montalcino is a wonderful introduction to the Neri family's distinctive style.
Drawn from vineyards across the estate, the 2021 captures the character of an excellent Tuscan vintage, with beautifully ripened fruit, vibrant acidity and fine tannins. Careful maturation adds complexity while allowing Sangiovese's natural fragrance and savoury personality to remain at the forefront.
Bright ruby red with garnet highlights. Ripe Morello cherry, wild raspberry and red plum mingle with violet, dried rose petals, sweet tobacco and a hint of liquorice. The palate is generous yet beautifully balanced, with juicy red fruit, refreshing acidity and firm, finely textured tannins. Notes of cedar, dried herbs and earthy spice carry through a long, satisfying finish.
Try it with Tuscan sausage and white bean stew, porcini mushroom ravioli with sage, or slow roasted lamb with garlic and rosemary. Its lively acidity also makes it a terrific match for tomato based dishes and aged pecorino.
Cellaring: Drink 2028 to 2042+. Already expressive with decanting, but several years in the cellar will reveal greater savoury complexity.
