Fresh blue fruit with dried herbs, ripe stems and white pepper. Very juicy, fresh and fine-grained on the palate with a medium body and a crunchy, fluid finish. Quite long. Drink or hold.

The Catena Zapata Alta Historic Rows Malbec is a refined and elegant expression of Mendoza’s terroir, showcasing the historic vineyards that have been central to Catena Zapata’s legacy. Founded in 1902, Catena Zapata has been at the forefront of Argentine winemaking, with a focus on elevating Malbec to a world-class level. This wine pays homage to the “Historic Rows,” the original high-altitude vineyards that played a pivotal role in shaping the winery’s reputation.

The grapes for this Malbec are sourced from select rows in Catena’s high-altitude vineyards, including the iconic Adrianna and Nicasia vineyards in the Uco Valley. These sites, with their limestone-rich soils and cool climates, produce grapes of exceptional concentration, acidity, and complexity.

Hand-harvested and meticulously sorted, the grapes undergo cold maceration to enhance their aromatics and preserve the purity of the fruit. Fermentation is carried out using wild yeasts, followed by aging in French oak barrels to add depth and refinement.

On the nose, the Catena Zapata Alta Historic Rows Malbec offers an aromatic bouquet of blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum, layered with floral hints of violet, and undertones of cocoa, vanilla, and spice. The palate is full-bodied and velvety, with ripe dark fruit flavors, well-integrated oak, and a touch of minerality. Firm tannins and a bright acidity provide balance, leading to a long, complex finish.

This Malbec pairs beautifully with grilled meats, roasted lamb, or hearty pasta dishes. While approachable in its youth, it has the potential to age gracefully for 10-15 years, making it a valuable addition to any collection.
