Ripe plum, prune and violets, this has a vibrantly fruity, spicy and aromatic expression, giving way to bright acidity and woody, sharp tannins which build towards the finish. Mid-weight and sustained, this is quite attractive despite its youth and is likely best enjoyed now for its exuberant flavours 11 Dec 2024 Drink 2024–2030

d’Arenberg The Footbolt Shiraz is a classic McLaren Vale Shiraz with deep roots in Australian wine history. The Footbolt name dates back to the late 1800s, when the Osborn family used the term to describe a hardworking racehorse that had “run itself to a standstill.” It is a fitting name for a wine that reflects both effort and tradition, and one that has long been a cornerstone of the d’Arenberg range.
The vineyards lie across McLaren Vale, where ancient sandy loams over ironstone and clay sit alongside patches of limestone. These old, well established sites benefit from warm days tempered by cooling afternoon breezes from the nearby Gulf St Vincent, allowing Shiraz to ripen fully while retaining balance and freshness. Many of the vines are mature, contributing depth and concentration without excess weight.
Winemaking at d’Arenberg remains deliberately traditional under the watchful eye of Chester Osborn. Foot treading, basket pressing and minimal intervention are all part of the philosophy, with the aim of preserving texture, savoury detail and a strong sense of place. Oak is used judiciously, supporting the fruit rather than dominating it.
In the glass, The Footbolt Shiraz shows classic McLaren Vale character. Dark plum, blackberry and black cherry are layered with liquorice, black pepper, earthy spice and a subtle ferrous note. The palate is generous yet composed, with fine, chalky tannins and a savoury edge that carries through to a long, balanced finish. It is powerful without being heavy, and expressive without shouting.
This is a superb food wine. It pairs effortlessly with grilled meats, lamb, slow cooked beef, game and richly flavoured vegetable dishes. While immediately enjoyable, d’Arenberg The Footbolt Shiraz also rewards cellaring, developing greater complexity and savoury depth over ten years or more.
d’Arenberg The Footbolt Shiraz is a true McLaren Vale classic. Honest, characterful and deeply connected to its origins, it remains one of Australia’s most reliable and distinctive expressions of Shiraz.
