The 2021 comes across as a little more coiled and linear when compared to the ’20 release. Pure citrus and stone fruits riding on rails of mineral-laden acidity shoing hints of white flowers, struck match, soft spice, almond paste and gentle whiffs of marzipan and crushed stone. There's a relentless minerally velocity to the wine and a sense of umami and sapidity to its form as it gracefully disappears from view. Super stuff.

Mid-straw, bright and youthful in appearance. Aromas of just-ripe stone fruit, buttery pastry, melon, sweet spice and white lily. Fine, delicate and focused in flavour. There's a lovely savouriness and sophistication to the flavours and the acidity delivers plenty of ping and zap. A youthful wine that delivers real complexity. Drink

Dawson & James Chardonnay from the Derwent Valley is a quietly powerful and beautifully detailed cool climate Chardonnay shaped by one of Tasmania’s most refined growing regions and the steady hands of Peter Dawson and Tim James. The Derwent Valley sits further inland than many Tasmanian sites, delivering a long, slow ripening season that builds flavour intensity while preserving precision and acidity. Vineyards are planted on a mix of clay, gravel and sandstone soils, contributing both texture and a subtle mineral line. Fruit is hand picked, whole bunch pressed and wild fermented, with maturation in high quality French oak and time on lees to develop depth without losing clarity.
The aromas are complex and restrained rather than showy. White peach, nectarine and lemon curd sit alongside fresh pear and citrus blossom, layered with gentle struck flint, almond meal and hazelnut. There is a cool, savoury undertone of wet stone and sea breeze that speaks clearly of Tasmania’s climate and the Derwent’s long autumns. With air, the wine opens to reveal subtle brioche, oatmeal and spice notes from extended lees contact.
The palate is precise, structured and beautifully balanced. Stone fruit and citrus glide through a creamy yet focused mid palate, supported by bright, integrated acidity that keeps the wine taut and energetic. Flavours of peach skin, lemon pith, nougat and fine spice build in layers before tightening into a long, mineral driven finish. The oak is perfectly judged, adding shape and savoury detail rather than sweetness. While already impressive, this Chardonnay will reward patience over six to ten years, developing honeyed notes, toasted nuts and deeper savoury complexity.
A superb partner for roast chicken, grilled lobster, scallops, rich seafood dishes, mushroom risotto or aged soft cheeses. This is Tasmanian Chardonnay with confidence and restraint, offering both immediate pleasure and serious cellar credentials.
