This wine has been produced for many years, although it is rarely submitted for review. Now showing a Chianti Classico appellation, it is made in Tuscan clay amphorae called "orci." The organic Fontodi 2021 Chianti Classico Dino shows a wild, earthy character with potting soil and peat moss on top of baked cherry, plum and purple fruits. The primary fruit tones are very intense, almost raw, and the wine offers a charming mid-weight close with soft powdery tannins. The charming Dino is so easy to drink.Giovanni Manetti and his family have produced an excellent set of new wines that elegantly interpret the 2021 vintage. My favorite of the bunch is the 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Panzano Vigna del Sorbo, which has a very slight edge over the Flaccianello della Pieve, in my view.

The Fontodi Dino Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT is a captivating tribute to Tuscany’s rich winemaking heritage, crafted with precision and passion by Fontodi, one of the region’s most iconic estates. Named in honor of Dino Manetti, this wine is a pure expression of Sangiovese Grosso, celebrating the grape’s complexity and elegance within a modern framework.
On the nose, the wine reveals a vibrant bouquet of red cherries, wild strawberries, and cranberries, complemented by delicate floral notes of violets and hints of Mediterranean herbs. Subtle undertones of spice, earth, and a touch of leather add depth and intrigue.
The palate is medium-bodied, refined, and beautifully balanced, with silky tannins and lively acidity providing structure and vibrancy. Flavors of ripe red fruits are layered with savory nuances of dried herbs, tobacco, and a whisper of minerality. The finish is long and precise, leaving a lingering impression of freshness and finesse.
The Dino is sourced from the organically farmed vineyards of Fontodi in Panzano, situated in the heart of Chianti Classico. The estate’s commitment to sustainable viticulture and biodynamic practices ensures that the wine is a true reflection of its terroir. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks, followed by aging in large amphorae, a nod to ancient winemaking traditions that allow for purity and precision.
This wine pairs wonderfully with classic Tuscan dishes such as pappardelle al cinghiale (wild boar ragu), bistecca alla Fiorentina, or aged pecorino cheese. Its elegant balance makes it equally delightful with lighter fare like roasted chicken or vegetarian options such as mushroom risotto. While approachable now, the Dino has the potential to evolve gracefully over 8–10 years, gaining further complexity and depth.
