Heartland Director’s Cut Shiraz is a bold but beautifully controlled expression of Langhorne Creek, a region that consistently flies under the radar despite producing some of South Australia’s most characterful reds. The vineyards sit on alluvial soils laid down by the Bremer River, with cooling lake breezes and natural flood irrigation giving the vines resilience, balance and freshness even in warm seasons. It is a terroir perfectly suited to generous yet savoury Shiraz.
Heartland is the collaboration between viticulturist Ben Glaetzer and winemaker Nick Burr, two names synonymous with understanding site and variety rather than chasing excess. The Director’s Cut sits at the top of the range and is made from the best parcels, with low yields, careful oak selection and the confidence to let Langhorne Creek’s natural plushness speak without losing shape or detail.
In the glass, this is rich and inviting. Dark plum, blackberry and blueberry roll out first, followed by liquorice, black pepper and warm spice. There is plenty of depth, but it is never clumsy. The tannins are fine and supportive, and a core of freshness keeps the wine energetic and food friendly rather than heavy. It has that signature Langhorne Creek generosity, but with polish and intent.
At the table, this is a great match for slow cooked lamb, barbecued meats or dishes with smoky, charred elements. It also has the structure to age comfortably for a decade or more, gaining savoury complexity, leather and spice as it evolves. A confident, modern Australian Shiraz that still respects its regional roots.
