2021 Hutton Vale Farm Shiraz, Eden Valley

The Hutton Vale Farm Shiraz from Eden Valley is a wine with deep heritage, authenticity and character, crafted from one of South Australia’s most historic family-owned vineyards. The Angas family established Hutton Vale Farm in the 1840s, and today Jan and John Angas continue the legacy, farming not just vines but also sheep, cattle and orchards in a true mixed-farming tradition. Their Shiraz comes from old vines planted in the high, rolling Eden Valley, where cooler temperatures and ancient soils give wines of elegance, perfume and longevity.

In the glass it is deep crimson with purple hues. The bouquet is aromatic and layered, showing blackberry, dark plum and mulberry alongside lifted violet, black pepper, spice and hints of savoury earth. On the palate it is medium to full-bodied, with concentrated dark fruit flavours wrapped in fine tannins and bright acidity. Notes of liquorice, cocoa and smoky oak add complexity, while the finish is long, silky and savoury. This is Shiraz with structure and refinement, a perfect example of Eden Valley’s cooler climate style compared to its Barossa neighbours.

Food pairings highlight the wine’s balance of power and freshness. Roast lamb with rosemary, slow-cooked beef brisket, venison pie, or chargrilled eggplant with Middle Eastern spices are all excellent matches. It also works beautifully with hard cheeses like matured cheddar. With 12 to 15 years of cellaring potential, it evolves into a more complex wine, gaining notes of leather, truffle and spice while maintaining its fruit purity.
