The Mader family have been growing vines in the village of Hunawihr for generations, quietly building a reputation for authentic, terroir driven Alsace wines that capture the freshness and purity of the region. Jean Luc Mader continues this tradition with a thoughtful approach in both vineyard and cellar, favouring gentle handling and allowing the fruit and site to take centre stage.
The vineyards around Hunawihr sit amongst some of Alsace's most famous real estate, with a mix of limestone and clay soils helping Riesling achieve its trademark balance of generosity and precision. The cooler conditions of the area preserve acidity and aromatic lift, producing wines that are immediately appealing while retaining the structure to age gracefully.
The colour is a bright pale straw with green highlights. Aromas of lime zest, green apple and white peach rise from the glass alongside hints of white flowers and crushed stone. The palate is crisp and energetic, combining citrus and orchard fruit flavours with a fine mineral thread that runs from start to finish. Fresh acidity gives the wine wonderful drive, while the finish is clean, dry and refreshingly saline.
A natural partner for Coffin Bay oysters, grilled Spencer Gulf prawns, snapper with lemon and herbs, or a warm tart of caramelised onion and goat cheese. Drinking beautifully now and likely to continue developing additional complexity over the next six to eight years.
