Jim Barry Single Vineyard Watervale Shiraz is a pure, site-driven expression of Clare Valley Shiraz that showcases the elegance and concentration that this cooler subregion can deliver. While Clare is often celebrated for its Riesling, the Barry family has long championed Shiraz from the rolling hills and terra rossa soils of Watervale — and this single vineyard bottling captures the finesse and structure that sets it apart from warmer-climate counterparts.
The vineyard lies at altitude, benefiting from cooler nights that help preserve natural acidity while allowing for full flavour development. Fermentation takes place in small open-top fermenters, followed by maturation in French oak hogsheads for 12 to 15 months. The winemaking is measured — polished but not flashy — allowing the vineyard's character to shine.
Aromas lead with dark cherry, blackberry and plum, wrapped in hints of cedar, anise and dry spice. The palate is medium to full bodied, driven by dark berry fruit, fine tannins and a thread of graphite and crushed herbs. There’s great purity and length here, with freshness that lifts the wine and a savoury finish that speaks clearly of Watervale.
Food pairing: pairs beautifully with lamb backstrap, mushroom and thyme pie, roasted beetroot salad with chèvre, or smoky grilled eggplant. Also a great match with aged cheddar or a peppery sausage roll.
Cellar potential: drink from now to 2034. Will build in complexity over the next decade, developing earthy notes, spice and a softer texture.
