A very good shiraz, with lower elevation sourcing seeming to suit this variety in a hot climate. Paradoxical, perhaps, yet we may as well drink a grape better suited to temperate climes, draped in Australiana, when planted in hot ones. Clove, mace, allspice, blue fruits, charcuterie, aniseed and scape of beautifully extracted tannins, oak and grape, curtailing the fruit sweetness. Simple mercy! Gritty and llicorella-pungent of feel. The tannins and the oak, unlike with grenache, make this wine.

Juxtaposed Minchella Vineyard Shiraz from McLaren Vale is a bold and refined wine that showcases the depth, complexity, and signature richness of this iconic South Australian region. McLaren Vale, known for its warm Mediterranean climate and fertile soils, is a perfect home for Shiraz, a varietal that thrives in these conditions, producing wines with intense fruit flavors, smooth tannins, and great aging potential. Juxtaposed, with its commitment to quality and precision, has crafted a Shiraz that captures the essence of McLaren Vale, with the added distinction of the Minchella Vineyard's old vines.
The Minchella Vineyard, with its low-yielding, mature vines, contributes exceptional fruit to this Shiraz. The vineyard is located in one of the region’s premium subzones, where the combination of warm days and cool evenings allows the grapes to ripen slowly, resulting in wines with a balance of rich fruit and vibrant acidity. The winemaking approach is minimalist, with the focus on letting the fruit express its natural character. The wine is fermented in small batches and aged in French oak, which imparts subtle complexity and structure while still allowing the bold fruit flavors to take center stage.
In the glass, Juxtaposed Minchella Vineyard Shiraz has a deep, dark ruby color, reflecting its concentration and intensity. The nose is rich and inviting, with aromas of ripe black fruit such as blackberry, plum, and black cherry, complemented by layers of spice, black pepper, and a touch of licorice. The oak aging adds depth, with subtle notes of vanilla, toasted almond, and cocoa that enhance the wine’s complexity.
On the palate, this Shiraz is full-bodied and velvety, with smooth, well-integrated tannins and a round mouthfeel. The dark fruit flavors are bold and concentrated, with blackberry, plum, and a touch of black currant leading the way. The wine’s spice and oak influence add layers of complexity, with hints of clove, vanilla, and a touch of chocolate. The acidity is fresh and provides balance, ensuring that the wine remains lively and vibrant despite its richness. The finish is long, smooth, and satisfying, with lingering fruit and spice notes that leave a refined, lasting impression.
Juxtaposed Minchella Vineyard Shiraz is a versatile wine that pairs beautifully with a range of dishes. Its bold fruit and smooth tannins make it an ideal match for grilled meats such as steak, lamb, or venison, as well as hearty pasta dishes like ragù or lasagna. It also pairs wonderfully with charcuterie, rich stews, and aged cheeses like cheddar or Gruyère. Whether enjoyed on its own or with a meal, this Shiraz is a perfect expression of McLaren Vale’s winemaking potential.
