Beautifully named, The Bogan has become a finer offering over the years. An assemblage of estate shiraz vines planted in 1899 and 1960s, it seems to have a little more clarity, balance and space than past releases. It's still Barossa through and through: rich in dark berry fruits, spices, violets and earthen depth, but tension and a savoury shape has replaced the pure horsepower of old. Best drunk in your favourite flanny shirt watching Bathurst on telly ... actually anytime is a good choice. It's a beauty from a cracking vintage.

Coffee and charred meats mix with berry compote on the nose. The palate is tight and needs time to unfurl—there's plenty of fruit in this full-bodied red yet it's reluctant to show off. The tannins are firm yet fine with a lick of salty licorice. Give this considered 'bogan' time to reveal its full potential 20 DEC 2023 Drink 2026–2034
