“I’ve been calling [the Lake Breeze ‘Bernoota’ Shiraz Cabernet] the best value red in the country since my twenties,” says Ryan of the 94-point wine. “There’s a plushness, a fullness, a generosity to this wine without it ever feeling forced... It just consistently delivers.”
The 2021 vintage of the Lake Breeze ‘Bernoota’ – which retails at only $22 (“I don’t know how they do it” – sits in the Red Wines under $35 category
Nearly 30 years ago, a young bottleshop attendant was asked what he thought was the best value red in Australia. Now, as he poses that question in the national broadsheet, that bottleshop boy realises the answer hasn’t changed. Bernoota fans should chip in some of the money they’ve saved over the years to build a statue in its honour. The very definition of bang for buck.14.5% abv

A 60/40% blend ex-40-year-old vines, the ’21 vintage playing its part. Open-fermented for 8 to 10 days, finished in American oak; matured for 20 months in American and French barriques. The wine is a flood of dark fruit pulsating through to the finish.

The wine was fermented on skins in open static fermenters for 7-10 days, followed by maturation for 20 months in American and French oak barriques. The wine shows dark fruit characters of blackberry and plums, with a hint of choc mint and smoky oak aromas. The palate encompasses all of the trademark Langhorne Creek fruit sweetness and soft tannins. Although extremely palatable now, it will mature gracefully with correct cellaring for the next 8-10 years.
