A subtle wine with a restrained nose of Parma violets, austere cherry stones, licorice and balsamic. Medium-bodied with elegant, velvety tannins, chewy acidity, a huge structure and concentrated fruit. Tight, harmonious aftertaste. Try from 2026.

The 2021 Barolo La Serra is a gorgeous wine from Marcarini. Macerated cherry, spice, orange peel and star anise give the 2021 a decidedly exotic profile, especially in its aromatics. Barolos from La Serra can be a bit angular, but the 2021 here is distinguished by its textural depth and persistence. This is a terrific showing.

La Serra is one of the historic crus of La Morra, producing Barolo that is often prized for its perfume and elegance. Marcarini has been part of the Langhe landscape since the mid nineteenth century, with the family firmly rooted in La Morra where Nebbiolo thrives on the region’s pale marl soils. Today the estate is guided by Elisa Marcarino, continuing the family’s dedication to traditional Barolo that reflects vineyard identity and long ageing potential. The La Serra vineyard sits on south facing slopes that provide ideal sun exposure while maintaining the finesse that characterises Barolo from La Morra.
In the glass the wine shows a classic garnet colour with bright ruby reflections. The aromas are lifted and beautifully expressive, revealing rose petal, red cherry and wild strawberry alongside hints of liquorice, dried herbs and subtle spice. As it opens further notes of tobacco, truffle and forest floor add depth and complexity.
The structure is refined yet persistent, with vibrant red berry fruit supported by firm, polished tannins and bright acidity that gives the wine both lift and longevity. Flavours of dried cherry, earth and spice develop through the wine, while gentle oak contributes texture without masking the fruit. The finish is long and savoury with lingering floral and mineral notes typical of great La Morra Barolo.
Braised beef, truffle pasta, slow cooked lamb or aged Parmigiano Reggiano make excellent partners. With its balance of structure and elegance, Marcarini La Serra Barolo will evolve beautifully for twenty to twenty five years, gradually revealing deeper layers of leather, dried rose and earthy complexity.
