The Italian red variety, Teroldego, may not be a household name in Australian drinking circles just yet, but for those for whom DNA and genetics hold an interest, this variety is the uncle (or possibly aunt, if you prefer) of the much more famous Shiraz/Syrah. Bright crimson in colour, we have notes of plums, herbs, roast meats, warm earth, soy and aniseed. A softish palate with fine tannins, focus and length. The wine really lifts on the palate and we see flavours of licorice and coffee grinds emerge. Enjoy this now, but if it can spend a few years in the cellar, it should look even better in five or six years’ time.

Maso di Mezzo Teroldego Rotaliano DOC from Trentino is a distinguished red wine made from the native Teroldego grape, which thrives in the unique terroir of the Piana Rotaliana in the Trentino region of northern Italy. The Teroldego grape is often referred to as the "prince of Trentino" due to its deep connection to the region and its ability to produce wines of great complexity, elegance, and structure. The Rotaliano DOC designation is specific to the best sites in Trentino where Teroldego reaches its highest potential, thanks to the region's alluvial soils and the cooling influences from the nearby Dolomites.
Maso di Mezzo is produced by Cavit, one of the leading cooperative wineries in Trentino, which focuses on crafting wines that reflect the authenticity of the region and the characteristics of indigenous grape varieties. This Teroldego is a fine example of the winery’s commitment to producing high-quality, terroir-driven wines.
The Maso di Mezzo Teroldego Rotaliano has a deep ruby color, with an intense bouquet of dark fruits like black cherry, plum, and blackberry. On the nose, these fruit aromas are accompanied by hints of violets, licorice, and earthy tones, with subtle undertones of spice and tobacco, often derived from careful aging. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and robust, with rich fruit flavors complemented by firm tannins and balanced acidity. There’s a notable minerality and freshness, which is characteristic of Teroldego grown in the Rotaliano plain, adding complexity and length to the wine's finish.
This wine is well-suited to pairing with hearty dishes, such as roasted meats, game, and aged cheeses, making it a versatile choice for those who enjoy food-friendly reds. The structured nature of Teroldego allows it to age gracefully, developing more complex tertiary notes over time, although it is also enjoyable in its youth for its vibrant fruit character.
