Upfront and inviting, the bouquet shows dark berry, vanilla, toasty oak and warm spice aromas on the nose, leading to a silky-smooth palate that's filled with succulent fruit flavours. It's beautifully rounded and flavoursome, making it highly enjoyable. At its best: now to 2033.

Very deep purple-red colour with smoky char-oak and black fruit aromas, a very rich, full-bodied shiraz with lots of stiffing and a long carry, the tannins ample but more than compensated by the fruit richness. Fleshy, fruit-sweet and almost decadent shiraz that's great value for money. 18 JAN 2023 Drink 2023–2036
Grapes for the The Gaffer Shiraz have been sourced from five key vineyards in McLaren Vale; Martins, Gateway, John Rivers, Tim Hunts and Ben Riggs’ Piebald Gully Vineyard.
The Gaffer is a tribute to Ben Riggs great-great-great grandfather, John 'The Gaffer' Riggs (1814-1902), who was one of South Australia's most renowned farmers. This McLaren Vale Shiraz was made to acknowledge 150 years of the Riggs family's rich farming heritage in South Australia. Since 2006 The Gaffer Shiraz has worn its pink cap in acknowledgement of our partnership with the Flinders Foundation and their fight against cancer.
