TS - Published on 27 Jul 2014 James Halliday

Fine tannin texture and lively, cool season acidity define a firm, well structured and slightly astringent Bin 28. The flavour profile carries a developed, savoury air of game meat, pan juices, dried herbs and spice, suggesting a vintage for short to medium-term consumption. Matured for 12 months in used American oak.

Penfolds Bin 2 Shiraz Mataro is one of the more quietly intriguing wines in the Penfolds portfolio — a nod to tradition and regional history that combines plush South Australian Shiraz with the rustic charm of Mataro (also known as Mourvèdre). First released in 1960, Bin 2 was originally conceived as an alternative to the richer, oakier Penfolds styles, offering something a little more savoury and medium-bodied. Over time, it has evolved into a modern take on an old-school blend, one that continues to reward those who appreciate complexity without excess weight.

Shiraz forms the core of the wine, bringing bright fruit, spice and plush texture. Mataro, sourced from warm, dry-grown sites across South Australia including the Barossa Valley and Riverland, brings an earthy, muscular edge and a backbone of tannin and savoury depth. The fruit is fermented in stainless steel open-top fermenters and matured in older American and French oak hogsheads for 12 months to soften and integrate the components without overwhelming the fruit.

In the glass, Bin 2 shows a deep ruby colour and opens with aromas of blackberry, dark cherry, smoked meat, clove and dried herbs. There’s a hint of black olive, ironstone and cocoa from the Mataro, adding a rustic, savoury edge to the generous fruit of Shiraz. The palate is medium to full-bodied with supple tannins and juicy acidity, offering flavours of plum compote, pepper, and charcuterie, finishing with a gentle grip and earthy persistence.

This is a versatile red that works well with barbecued lamb, cassoulet, or mushroom ragu over polenta. It’s ready to enjoy now but will reward short- to medium-term cellaring over the next five to eight years.
