2021 Pio Cesare Barbera D'Alba Fides DOC, Piedmont

From a single estate vineyard in the heart of Barbera country, Pio Cesare Barbera d’Alba Fides represents a more concentrated and serious expression of this vibrant Piedmontese variety. The Pio Cesare family, crafting wines since 1881, has long balanced tradition with precision, and Fides is their statement Barbera, sourced from higher quality parcels and handled with greater care in both vineyard and cellar. Calcareous clay soils and low yielding vines deliver depth and structure, while careful oak maturation adds polish without masking the wine’s natural energy.

A deep ruby garnet with rich intensity fills the glass. Aromas unfold with ripe black cherry, plum and blackberry layered with violet, spice, cocoa and a touch of sweet oak. There is a darker, more brooding character here compared to classic Barbera, yet still lifted by freshness.

The palate is medium to full bodied and structured, delivering concentrated dark berry fruit framed by Barbera’s signature vibrant acidity and more pronounced, finely grained tannins. Notes of liquorice, dark chocolate and gentle spice build through the mid palate, leading to a long, persistent finish that feels both powerful and composed. This is a Barbera with real presence, capable of evolving over eight to twelve years into deeper, more savoury territory.

Slow cooked beef ragù folded through fresh pasta, braised short ribs with herbs, or aged cheeses laid out as the night stretches on. A spin of Verdi’s Requiem or something equally dramatic from Ennio Morricone, the wine carrying that same sense of scale, richness and Italian intensity.
