Poggiotondo Chianti Superiore DOCG Organic from Tuscany is a beautifully expressive, certified organic red that brings together the richness of the Tuscan hills and the elegance of traditional Sangiovese. Crafted by Alberto Antonini, one of Italy’s most respected winemakers, this Chianti is all about purity, vibrancy, and letting the land speak through the glass.
The Poggiotondo estate lies in the heart of Chianti, near the town of Cerreto Guidi, with vineyards planted on limestone-rich soils that give the wines freshness and mineral tension. The "Superiore" designation means the wine comes from lower-yielding vineyards and undergoes longer aging, resulting in more structure, depth, and finesse. It's aged in large oak casks and concrete, allowing for gentle oxygenation without overpowering the fruit.
In the glass, it shows a brilliant ruby red with garnet edges. The nose is a classic Sangiovese profile, wild cherry, crushed red berries, dried rose, and hints of Mediterranean herbs, underpinned by subtle earthy tones and a touch of spice. On the palate, it's medium-bodied but full of energy, with bright acidity, fine dusty tannins, and flavours of sour cherry, cranberry, dried thyme, and a savoury mineral finish. There’s a rustic charm here, but also polish and precision.
It’s an incredibly food-friendly wine, perfect with Tuscan staples like pappardelle al cinghiale, grilled sausages, pizza with prosciutto and rocket, or simply a wedge of aged Pecorino. It's also a great weeknight red with the soul of a much more serious wine, authentic, versatile, and packed with personality.
