Robert Oatley Finisterre Shiraz from McLaren Vale is a sleek, site-driven expression of Shiraz that leans into savoury structure and regional character rather than sheer power. From a label that consistently champions the idea of minimal intervention and vineyard expression, this wine showcases some of the Vale’s finest subregional fruit — typically from cooler, elevated blocks in Blewitt Springs or Willunga — with finesse and focus.
Fermented in small open-top fermenters with gentle extraction, the wine is matured in French oak puncheons, mostly seasoned, to preserve the fruit’s purity. Winemaker Larry Cherubino steers clear of excessive oak and overripe concentration, crafting a Shiraz that’s textural, aromatic and finely tuned.
The nose opens with dark plum, blueberry, dried herbs, cracked pepper and a flicker of graphite. The palate is mid to full bodied, yet refined, showing black fruit, cocoa nib, and earth, with silky tannins and a savoury, mineral-driven finish. There’s great balance and tension — a Shiraz with precision and energy, not just weight.
Food pairing: brilliant with lamb backstrap, chargrilled mushrooms, eggplant parmigiana, or venison with pepperberry jus. Also a great companion to aged cheddar or a mushroom and thyme pie.
Cellar potential: drinking well now, but will evolve beautifully over 8 to 12 years, gaining complexity, foresty notes and gentle spice.
