Deep, dark red with a good purple tint, the bouquet is smoky charcuterie, dried herbs and bresaola, berry fruits are there but buried deep among the forceful tannins and savoury/barrel-derived nuances. The length is prodigious assisted by a warmth from alcohol, the concentrated flavour more than a match for it. Long and resonating. A powerful wine with masses of tannins, and very ageworthy. 18 Jan 2024 Drink 2024–2036

The S.C. Pannell Tempranillo Touriga from McLaren Vale is a vibrant fusion of Spain and Portugal, reimagined through the lens of Australian terroir. Steve Pannell, always ahead of the curve, has long championed Iberian varieties in the Vale, and this blend is one of his boldest expressions. It’s dark, juicy, deeply savoury, and completely delicious.
Tempranillo, the backbone of the blend, brings black cherry, dried herbs and fine tannins, while Touriga Nacional contributes lifted florals, dark plum and a graphite-like structure. The two varieties complement each other beautifully—where Tempranillo gives shape and classicism, Touriga injects vibrancy, fragrance and a wild edge. Together they create a wine that is moreish and distinctive, equal parts rustic charm and polished finesse.
The fruit is grown in the ironstone and gravel soils of McLaren Vale, ideal for Mediterranean varietals. Fermented with wild yeasts and matured in large-format oak, the wine maintains purity and freshness, with minimal winemaking intervention. Expect aromas of black fruits, violets, olive tapenade and earthy spice, with a palate that’s plush and brooding but framed by savoury tannins and bright acidity.
Perfect alongside chargrilled meats, smoky chorizo or slow-roast mushrooms. Drink now or cellar for up to 10 years.
