Firm and elegantly structured, the delicious, focused palate features juicy black cherry, licorice and mocha before closing on a hint of saline. It has great energy thanks to bright acidity while alongside decisive, tightly woven tannins provide the framework. It’s still edgy and nervous and needs time to fully develop. Drink 2028–2036.

The 2021 Barbaresco Basarin is a dense, rich wine. Macerated cherry, plum, lavender, rose petals, spice and new leather are all dialed up. The natural intensity of the year comes through in this decidedly dark, intense Barbaresco. A return to super-classic winemaking balances things out nicely though. I expect the Basarin to be the most approachable of these 2021s.
