Block 4. Tom Ward’s Hill Park Pinot Noir takes the best fruit from a north-to-south facing site. Cool weather in 2021 led to one of the lowest yields he’s experienced, which means there isn’t a huge amount of this wine to go around. A shame, as it’s a wine you’ll want more of. Think morello cherries in syrup, hints of sweet, sun-dried cherry tomatoes and Davidson plum skin alongside cracked red clay and sandstone with elements of allspice and white pepper. Acidity is elegant and linear, and the wine finishes with finesse. It will age gracefully over a many years.

Swinging Bridge Hill Park Pinot Noir from Orange is a beautifully crafted wine that showcases the elegance and complexity of this cool-climate region in New South Wales. Orange is rapidly gaining recognition for its ability to produce exceptional Pinot Noir, thanks to its high altitude, cool nights, and warm, sunny days. Swinging Bridge, a family-owned winery known for its focus on sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking, has created a Pinot Noir that reflects both the purity of the fruit and the distinctive character of the region.
The Pinot Noir grapes for this wine are sourced from the estate’s Hill Park Vineyard, which benefits from the cool conditions of the Orange region. The slow ripening of the grapes allows for the development of rich fruit flavors while preserving the vibrant acidity that is a hallmark of great Pinot Noir. The winemaking process is hands-off, with the wine fermented in small batches and aged in French oak barrels to add subtle complexity and structure without overshadowing the delicate fruit character.
In the glass, Swinging Bridge Hill Park Pinot Noir has a bright, ruby-red color, which hints at its vibrancy and youthful nature. The nose is aromatic and expressive, with fresh red fruit aromas of cherry, raspberry, and strawberry, along with floral notes of rose petal and violet. There’s also a touch of spice, with subtle undertones of clove and cinnamon, and a hint of earthy complexity that adds depth to the bouquet.
On the palate, this Pinot Noir is medium-bodied with smooth, silky tannins and a fine texture. The red fruit flavors are bright and fresh, with juicy cherry, raspberry, and cranberry leading the way, while the wine’s natural acidity provides balance and freshness. The oak influence is gentle, adding layers of spice, vanilla, and a touch of toasted oak. The finish is long and elegant, with lingering red fruit and a subtle earthy note that leaves a satisfying aftertaste.
Swinging Bridge Hill Park Pinot Noir is a versatile wine that pairs beautifully with a wide range of dishes. Its bright fruit and smooth tannins make it an excellent match for roasted poultry, such as duck or chicken, as well as grilled meats like lamb or pork. It also pairs wonderfully with earthy dishes like mushroom risotto, charcuterie, or soft cheeses like Brie or goat cheese. Whether enjoyed on its own or with a meal, this Pinot Noir is a perfect example of the elegance and finesse that Orange can produce.
