There is a quiet confidence to TarraWarra’s Reserve Chardonnay, the kind that comes from a site that has been dialled in over decades rather than chasing trends. High on the slopes overlooking the Yarra Valley, the estate has long been one of the region’s benchmarks, originally established by Eva and Marc Besen, with winemaking now in the hands of Clare Halloran, who has a knack for precision without stripping away generosity.
Fruit is drawn from the best parcels on the estate, where the combination of cooler air, well drained soils and long ripening seasons builds layers rather than weight. The result leans into restraint, but never feels thin. There is a gentle glow of white peach and nectarine, citrus peel and a flicker of grapefruit zest, all wrapped in subtle cashew and almond notes from beautifully judged oak. Nothing sticks out, everything feels in place.
Texture is where it really starts to hum. Fine, chalky acidity threads through the palate, giving shape to flavours that move from lemon curd and stone fruit into a savoury, almost flinty finish. It carries length rather than power, the kind of Chardonnay that keeps revealing more with air and a bit of patience in the glass.
It is right at home alongside roast chicken with tarragon and butter, grilled Moreton Bay bugs with a squeeze of lemon, or even a simple plate of freshly shucked oysters where that saline edge can really shine. There is enough structure here to handle richer dishes too, think pork belly with apple and fennel, or a silky lobster risotto.
Cellaring will reward those who can wait. Five to ten years will bring more complexity, with nutty, honeyed tones and a deeper savoury character emerging while the line of acidity keeps everything fresh.
