Terroir is more than the sum of its altitude, soil and fruit. It is also a prism for focusing skill and intent. As a beautiful blend of local varieties, Terra de Cuques Negre captures the complex soul of Torroja terroir. Llicorella-grown Carignan establishes the structure, backbone and acidity while clay-born Grenache lends the elegant expression of red fruit. The organically farmed vines range from 25 – 40 years old and grow at 400 meters in elevation. The grapes are vinified for 7 - 10 days in whole bunches with wild yeast in cement and inox tanks before undergoing 8 months of further aging, also in cement and inox.

True to its origins and signature, Terra de Cuques charms with its warm and supple nature. Rich black and red fruits reminisce about its many hours of copious sunshine. Yet a cooling wind threads through the wine as well, as both a fine, persistent acidity and fresh herbal essence. Wonderfully juicy, balanced and expressive, a wine without pretensions, simply telling the liquid story of a place and a people and a time.

Terra de Cuques Negre is the new name for Terroir al Límit’s formerly named Torroja Vi de Vila (or village wine). This is primarily because Huber wanted to introduce fruit from a variety of villages, not only Torroja. The 2018 was the first release to include fruit from several small vineyards in the cooler, high-altitude terroirs of Poboleda and La Morera, heading northwards towards the Montsant ranges. In spite of the new vineyards, the wine remains an equal split of Cariñena (Carignan) and Garnatxa (Grenache).

At over 350 metres above sea level, the vineyards in question are some of the highest old-vine red sites in Priorat (the youngest vines that provide fruit for this blend are more than 30 years old). Most of the vines sit on llicorella slate soils, except for a portion of the Garnatxa, which is planted on much sparser limestone clay soils. This cuvée is also the beneficiary of any declassified material from TaL’s top vineyards. Made with 100% whole bunches, the grapes were harvested by hand and layered into tank where their weight produced just enough juice to begin fermentation. The wine was raised in a 3,500-litre Stockinger foudre and a variety of concrete tanks for 14 months.
