2021 Thousand Candles Gathering Field Shiraz Malbec, Yarra Valley

A blend of 50/50% shiraz/malbec. A gorgeous bright crimson purple. I've not come across this blend before but from what was a great vintage in the Yarra Valley, this totally works. Dark plums, blackberries, smoked meats and black pepper aromas abound. The stylish palate is concentrated and very well balanced with ripe, fine-grained tannins rounding out a wine to be enjoyed now and over the next five to seven years – if not longer.

A 50/50 blend. No bunches. Old French oak. Fresh blackberry, exotic spice, a little grilled meat, dried flowers. It’s medium-bodied, but very concentrated, deep and chewy with a distinct ‘mineral’ character to acidity, dark tobacco, and a long slate-y finish. So distinctive and really very impressive.

The winery has built a reputation for expressive, site influenced wines shaped by sustainable vineyard practices and gentle cellar handling. Shiraz brings spice and savoury depth while Malbec contributes colour, plush fruit and mid palate generosity, creating a wine that feels both structured and immediately engaging.

A deep ruby purple fills the glass with vibrant intensity. Aromas rise with dark plum, blackberry and blueberry layered with cracked pepper, violet and subtle earthy spice. There is a lifted freshness to the bouquet that keeps the wine from feeling heavy, instead offering a sense of brightness and energy.

The palate is medium to full bodied and flowing, delivering juicy black fruit and cherry flavours framed by fine tannins and lively acidity. Notes of cocoa, dried herbs and gentle oak influence build through the mid palate, leading to a smooth, persistent finish that balances richness with finesse. While delicious now for its vibrancy, it will continue to gain savoury complexity over six to eight years in the cellar.
