2021 Tiziano Grasso Barolo Briccolina DOCG, Piedmont

The 2021 Barolo Briccolina is gorgeous. Medium in body and resonant, with terrific depth, the 2021 shows the more delicate side of Serralunga. Even so, there is plenty of weight and body waiting to emerge. Crushed rose petal, blood orange, mint, spice, white pepper and gravel open effortlessly in the glass. This is impeccably done.

From the steep hills of Monforte d’Alba in Piedmont comes a Barolo that captures the power and depth of one of the region’s most respected crus. Briccolina is a small but highly prized vineyard site known for producing Nebbiolo with structure, perfume and remarkable ageing potential. Tiziano Grasso works with carefully managed parcels in this historic zone, focusing on traditional techniques that allow the vineyard character to shine through. The soils here are rich in limestone and clay, and the elevated exposure ensures slow ripening and excellent aromatic development for Nebbiolo.

In the glass the colour is classic garnet with brick edged reflections, a hallmark of the variety. The aromatics are complex and beautifully layered, revealing rose petal, dried cherry and raspberry alongside hints of tar, liquorice and truffle. Subtle notes of spice and tobacco emerge with air, adding further depth.

On the palate it is full bodied yet finely structured. Red berry fruit forms the core, supported by firm, well defined tannins and vibrant acidity that give both lift and longevity. Flavours of dried cherry, earth and spice unfold through the mid palate, leading to a long, savoury finish marked by elegance and persistence. It is a classic expression of Barolo that combines structure with aromatic finesse.

Pair with slow braised beef, wild mushroom risotto, truffle pasta or aged Parmigiano Reggiano. While impressive with extended decanting in its youth, this Briccolina Barolo will cellar confidently for twenty to twenty five years, developing deeper notes of leather, forest floor and spice.
